The Senate on this Tuesday quickly approved to a bill that will mandate the disclosure of official records associated with the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the US House of Representatives and a reversal by the president and his Republican allies. Trump's team changed course after an extended period of trying to forestall the cross-party initiative involving a scandal that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.
Swift Approval in Congress
Senators proceeded by general agreement, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a formal roll call vote, expediting the process. Earlier that day, the House voted decisively for the bill on a near-unanimous vote.
“The American people have waited long enough. The survivors have waited long enough,” the top Senate Democrat declared in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before requesting the chamber to adopt it by consent. “Reveal the truth. Ensure full disclosure.”
Presidential Signature
This legislation next goes to Trump for his endorsement. He indicated on Monday that he would sign the measure.
Although Trump has for months dismissed the controversy over the official management of the scandal as a “Democrat hoax”, he voiced approval for the House bill over the past few days, and stated he would give his assent if it reaches his desk.
Reaction
Opposition lawmakers, along with those affected and their representatives who were seated in a public section, broke into applause after the bill was enacted. Lone dissent came from a Louisiana Republican, who stated he feared the measure would disclose identifying details of individuals involved, those under scrutiny and others caught up in the investigation.
