The speculation around this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team is likely building a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it sparked the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable with a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously open-ended, letting players to experiment both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
