European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut security grants to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
